7 Delicious Sandwich Breads

A little bit about the humble sandwich…

In today’s world, sandwiches are a staple in many of our diets as they are extremely versatile and easy to make. The sandwich has simply come from the concept of ‘meat and bread’. As with looking at the origin of a lot of things, pinpointing the exact time of emergence of the sandwich is very difficult. However, this blog post explains briefly about where sandwiches came from and some easy but delicious sandwich ideas!

It has been said that sandwiches go back all the way to the 1st century where a Jewish rabbi ate a mixture of apples, spices and nuts between two matzos. The simple idea of sandwiching two foods together may show that this was already a popular way of eating in the Middle East. However, the sandwich probably didn’t become the sandwich we know and love until around the 18th century.

It has been recorded that the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu wanted a snack which meant he didn’t have to leave the table whilst he was gambling. The sandwich was made by an unknown aide to John Montagu (probably his chef) and the rest is history! It has been suggested that John Montagu then introduced the idea of the sandwich to his high society friends and then the ‘sandwich’ caught on.

Of course that’s only a very brief explanation of the origin of sandwiches; you can look at Open Sandwich, Tori Avey and All That’s Interesting for more information about the timeline of the sandwich.
